Can we survive “Tesla-Time” innovation?

At the recent TSSS event (CSR and the Capital Markets – click for event summary) a conversation broke out about the power of corporate innovation to drive change…as you may have guessed, the company being discussed was Tesla.

The point being made by one of the panelists was that the markets can drive great change and can be an excellent way to deal with environmental and social challenges.  For the most part, I think everyone in the room agreed but this idea gets tricky when we dig into it a little further.

An unexpected message from one of Canada’s largest banks…we need greater income equality

A moneylender sees the light, discovering a spirit of giving and generosity. It’s a classic Christmas tale of redemption – and redistribution ­­– but this year the convert in question appears to be one of Canada’s biggest banks. In a recent report, economists at TD bank laid out “The Case for Leaning Against Income Inequality” pointing out the dangers of the widening divide, and giving some strong suggestions on how to turn the tide.

Warby Parker shows that donating eyeglasses is a successful business model

Just when you thought a particular business sector was incapable of change, along comes a company that turns the sector on its head….introducing Warby Parker.

More than 700 million people are without access to eyewear, and 90% of those people live in the developing world. That means approximately 15% of the world’s population cannot effectively learn or work because of poor eyesight. It is estimated that a pair of glasses increases a person’s productivity by 35% and has the potential to increase their income 20%.
