Can Walmart make a business case for raising the minimum wage?

walmartWalmart’s decision to increase the pay of 500,000 full-time and part-time U.S employees to $9.00 an hour, with a further increase to $10.00 an hour by February 2016, has received a mixed reaction from investment analysts. With the $1 billion price tag this fiscal year, is this decision in the interests of shareholders?

In November, Canadian mining firm, Nevsun Resources, was sued in a Vancouver court by three Eritrean refugees alleging that Nevsun “aided, abetted, contributed to and became an accomplice to the use of forced labor, crimes against humanity and other human rights abuses” at an Eritrean mine.  The Nevsun case is just the most recent human rights suit to appear in Canadian court, where the alleged harm was committed by a Canadian corporation operating abroad.

An unexpected message from one of Canada’s largest banks…we need greater income equality

A moneylender sees the light, discovering a spirit of giving and generosity. It’s a classic Christmas tale of redemption – and redistribution ­­– but this year the convert in question appears to be one of Canada’s biggest banks. In a recent report, economists at TD bank laid out “The Case for Leaning Against Income Inequality” pointing out the dangers of the widening divide, and giving some strong suggestions on how to turn the tide.

Warby Parker shows that donating eyeglasses is a successful business model

Just when you thought a particular business sector was incapable of change, along comes a company that turns the sector on its head….introducing Warby Parker.

More than 700 million people are without access to eyewear, and 90% of those people live in the developing world. That means approximately 15% of the world’s population cannot effectively learn or work because of poor eyesight. It is estimated that a pair of glasses increases a person’s productivity by 35% and has the potential to increase their income 20%.
