What’s state of the art in sustainability reporting?

Getting-the-message-outRewarding the best of the best at the CRRA Awards gives an inkling on sustainability reporting in 2014.

For the last three years my firm (Terrafiniti) has had the distinct pleasure of supporting CorporateRegister.com’s annual CR Reporting Awards (CRRA 15), the unique global, non-financial reporting accolades.

Our role has been to support shortlisting; reading and scoring all awards entries, which gives a fantastic snapshot of current practice in reporting across the world. This year (2014, for the 2015 Awards), the CRRA had a record number of entries, with around 100 organisations submitting reports.

sustainability_reportSustainability reporting in Canada today presents a dilemma. On the one hand, a 2014 study of Canadian reporters by Stakeholder Research Associates Canada (SRA) suggests that a mere 42% of Canadian companies listed on the TSX Composite disclose meaningfully ESG information. SRA’s research also found that among 100 reporting companies across various sectors and geographic regions in Canada, only 20% communicated a long-term strategy informed by targets and goals and only 38% identified their material issues.

Is sustainability reporting sustainable? There are some that think it is. The practice is now more widespread than ever before and and legislation in different parts of the world is supporting increased non-financial disclosure. This would indicate that reporting is here to stay. On the other hand, there are some that think it isn’t. There are those who subordinate sustainability reporting to the new financial reporting trend called Integrated Reporting, while others advocate online interactive disclosures instead of reports.

CSR isn’t getting the job done – now what?

CSR is dead – it’s over! So declared Peter Bakker – President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development – at the recent Sustainability Science Congress in Copenhagen.

Bakker’s key argument is that leading companies are already going way beyond CSR and are integrating sustainability within everything they do, in recognition that business cannot succeed, if society fails. He urges us to innovate – to align with facts, to redesign what we mean by good performance, and to get inspired by new definitions of success.
