Is sustainability reporting sustainable? There are some that think it is. The practice is now more widespread than ever before and and legislation in different parts of the world is supporting increased non-financial disclosure. This would indicate that reporting is here to stay. On the other hand, there are some that think it isn’t. There are those who subordinate sustainability reporting to the new financial reporting trend called Integrated Reporting, while others advocate online interactive disclosures instead of reports.

The economic system that we have relied on to create prosperity in the past century is beginning to fail us. We are seeing clear signs that our current economic ideology is not guiding us to sustainable prosperity. In fact, the existing system is actively contributing to an unstable climate, resource scarcity, biodiversity loss and a widening gap between the ultra-rich and everyone else.

So we’re asking the tough question: How can we achieve prosperity AND protect our planet?

Who needs to lead the way? Are the answers to be found in corporate business strategies or in government regulation? Or both? Or neither? Is our cultural narrative of what it means to be successful sending us in the wrong direction?

How can business, government and citizens alike work together to change course towards a better future, one that is both prosperous and sustainable? AND, what approaches need to be adopted immediately to ensure that we move QUICKLY in that direction?

David Suzuki: Nature Can’t Keep up With Our Pace – SLOW DOWN!

The Amazon rainforest is magnificent. Watching programs about it, we’re amazed by brilliant parrots and toucans, tapirs, anacondas and jaguars. But if you ever go there expecting to be overwhelmed by a dazzling blur of activity, you’ll be disappointed. The jungle has plenty of vegetation — hanging vines, enormous trees, bromeliads and more — and a cacophony of insects and frogs. But much of the activity goes on at night or high up in the canopy.

Nature needs time to adjust and adapt to biosphere changes. After life appeared on Earth, atmospheric oxygen gradually went from zero to 20 per cent, oceans appeared and disappeared, mountains thrust upward and then eroded, continents moved on tectonic plates, climate cycled between ice ages and warm intervals, magnetic poles reversed and re-reversed. Life flourished because species and ecosystems evolved over time.

A disconnect between marketers and consumers: Paul Pohlman of Unilever shares his thoughts.

Unilever Paul PohlmanLast month, Unilever CEO Paul Polman was in New York – to receive the Lifetime Achievement award from the Rainforest Alliance. As Rainforest Alliance President Tensie Whelan put it, “Paul has made several lifetimes of difference by leading Unilever to become a game changer.”

The company’s work with the Rainforest Alliance is well known – by setting targets like sourcing 100 percent of its palm oil sustainably, Unilever has made it easier for other companies to follow suit and helped complex supply chains become comfortable with change and collaboration.

And, the company hasn’t stopped at palm oil.
