“Sustainability” is not just environmental, social or economic: it is the integration and balance of all three aspects. Increasingly, leaders are calling for the need for emerging professionals to add value to industry using ethical environmental, social and economic means. Graduates from the MScSM Program are well-equipped to address sustainability challenges in a multitude of sectors, industries and organizations in exactly this way.

This 20-month graduate-level Program prepares graduates to make leading contributions and lasting advances in sustainability management.

MScSM is Unique

⇒ Curriculum Design. Unlike other programs in which students choose from science and/or business courses, the MScSM Program curriculum is specifically developed in an intentionally integrated way – it is designed using the concepts of integration science, and each course is taught through the lens of sustainability. This means that students are provided the training to think and act outside the traditional disciplinary black boxes, and truly learn to integrate knowledge from management, social, and natural sciences to address sustainability issues.

⇒ Specialization. The program is also unique among science and management graduate programs in that it provides a strong foundation in sustainability management with an opportunity to specialize in a management or science concentration. The program is for individuals who want to pursue management careers in sustainability-related divisions and organizations.

⇒ Real-World Experience. The Program has heavy engagement with sustainability-oriented industry partners, involved in a summer work-term, guest lectures, speaker series, company tours, informational interviews, mentorship, capstone projects and in-course projects.

⇒ Diversity. The students in the MScSM Program come from a wide range of disciplines: engineering, architecture, chemistry, environmental science, agribusiness, marketing, human resources, psychology, international development, and more. Some students have multiple degrees, and they come from all over the world. In 2015, we had 18 domestic students and 9 international students from 9 different countries!

Requirements for Entry

Students graduating from diverse disciplines such as natural science, social science, engineering, management, environment, and natural resource are eligible to apply to the program. The program is designed for intellectually curious students with a high potential for “outside the box” thinking and actions. The program admission committee considers an applicant’s academic credentials, personal achievements, ability to work in teams, leadership potential, and interest in integration of different disciplines to solve sustainability issues.

The admission committee takes a holistic approach to admissions and considers each applicant individually with the goal of admitting the most exceptional candidates. Candidates are evaluated on a total portfolio of previous performance, personal characteristics and life experiences, as well as academic and/or professional references, and a letter of intent. Minimum admission standards are available on our website.

⇒ Comparable Analyses Reports: Exploration of publicly-available information on sustainability is compared across industry competitors, with a view to making recommendations on future strategy.

⇒ Marketing in Sustainability: Working with an external industry partner, students create deliverables relating to a range of areas. Examples include promotion of products, employee engagement, exploring organics programs, and in support for community lobbying for new developments.

⇒ Capstone Project: Small groups of 2-3 students work with an industry partner over a period of months to solve a business challenge relating to sustainability.

Student Testimonial

“All competing programs I had been looking at were focused on policy and planning, where MScSM promised a hands-on and fully integrated experience with a heavy business administration focus and development of scientific expertise.   There are unique opportunities for students to learn and engage directly with professionals from a variety of industries. And the class? The students are creative, collaborative and ambitious. Our diverse backgrounds complement each other in a unique synergy, and we feed from each other’s perspectives. We are a tightly-knit group of young professionals that supports each individual as a member of our family.”
Tobias Mueller-Glodde, Class of 2016
